A Troll Hunt.....

Reports of a troll eating local livestock near Villensdorf, located near the edge of the Sackwald forest, reached the offices of the Department for Supernatural Affairs run by Ernst von Tiddenheim (the hereditary witchfinder general).  Von Tiddenheim put a team together comprising himself and his wife Eleanor, Samantha the white witch, Sargeant Manfred Harfenist (from the Kings Jagers) and Brother Osbert from the monastery of Alt-Wittenberg..... they travelled by coach .....

---oXo---

On a clear moonlit night, the squire of Villensdorf leads some of the local men into the rocky countryside to locate and kill a troll that has been taking their livestock....

Ernst Von Tiddenheim and his group of 'monster hunters' arrived in Villensdorf, they were supposed to be met by the local squire... but he had not waited for them.... they would have to search for the troll without any local guides...
The troll has emerged from his lair and is out for a night of hunting...
The group led by the local squire moved up over a rocky outcrop ...
they reached level ground, still nothing in sight... however the troll had heard them and was moving their way...
von Tiddenheim's group moved carefully through the rocks....
The troll sees the squires men, they see him and fire at him, wounding him...
Enraged, the troll charges at them swinging his club, knocking down one man
Tiddenheim's group moved to towards the sound of the shots fired. On arrival they opened fire to little affect, an attack spell from Samantha forced the troll back. The troll climbed up on a large rock and roared at his attackers...
The troll attacks the squire and his men again, avoiding the sting of a spell from Samantha's wand..
Everybody gets out of the way as the troll swings his mighty club...
The troll charges down a narrow defile downing one of the squires men, the rest are wrong-footed,  they'll have to try and catch up with the troll ...
The troll rounds the rocks and turns to face von Tiddenheim's party...
Brother Osbert tries to get round behind him as the rest move up to higher ground and open fire....
The troll turns and goes for Brother Osbert who dodges him and the troll continues on to swing his club at a couple of the squire's men...
Brother Osbert fires his blunderbus, the blessed projectiles and musket fire from the squire's men finally kill the troll......

a good nights hunting....

1)  Another nice enjoyable small game using my Simple Combat rules with relevant parts of Devilry Afoot for the troll's stats and actions.
2)  Of the squires men there 3 dead, 1 badly wounded and two with light wounds (they should have waited for von Tiddenheim & co).
3) von Tiddenheim & co, ok apart from a few bumps and scratches ... ready to deal with the next supernatural threat.

Hunting Frule....

Ernst von Tiddenheim was reading poetry to his wife Eleanor out by the obelisk in the grounds of their house...

His manservant Gutermann, ran up - sir, there is a message from the King, "Make all haste to investigate activities of monster Frule-men at the village of Felsfeld (cattle mutilated and stolen with villagers having been attacked)".
Very well Gutermann, send messages to the team to meet by the windmill at Felsfeld on the morrow..

Ernst von Tiddenheim was the hereditary witchfinder general of Wittenberg.  He was in charge of the Department for Supernatural Affairs whose responsibility included investigating and dealing with supernatural monsters.

---oXo---
The team assembled the next day by the windmill at Felsfeld  - Ernst & Eleanor Tiddenheim, their Servant Gutermann,  along with Heinrich Muller a hunter-seeker, Samantha the white witch,  Burt Hoffman (known as blunderbuss Burt), Sargeant Manfred Harfenist (from the Kings Jagers)

the team arrived in Felsfeld and met with a delegation of the villagers..
It was soon night-time and the the villagers scurried away to hide in their homes, while the team familiarised themselves with the layout of the village.
After discussion they decided to split into two groups one watching the road and the other the rough ground and rocky area - where the villagers had seen the Frule sometimes ...
As the team positioned themselves a small band of Frule approached.....
Tiddenheim sensed something and moved forward, Samantha followed him ...
The Frule bunched up and approached closer
The team moved forward cautiously... then suddenly a Frule loomed up out of the gloom and attacked Tiddenheim...

A deft bit of sword work and a pistol shot from Tiddenheim; with an attack spell issuing forth from Samantha's wand killed the Frule...
The rest of the Frule moved up and attacked anything in reach ....
soon the team was struggling, however many wounds they inflicted the Frule just kept fighting....
Finally Tiddenheim and his servant Gutermann killed the Frule they were fighting, concerned for his wife Tiddenheim went to her aid.....
It took four of them to kill the next one ....
The other three of the team had been fighting he last remaining Frule; it was now badly wounded and it  managed to get away....
The team fell back to the village, no more Frule appeared that night ...

Tiddenheim and his team stayed for two more days, scouring the area but there was no signs of any more Frule; the hunt was over for now and the team returned home.

Notes:
  • This game was a play test using my 'Simple Combat' rules with aspects of the Devilry Afoot ruleset.
  • The game played well, however some adjustments need to be made.
  • The Devilry Afoot rules slotted in reasonably well with my game rule mechanics.

Burnt to dust ....

continued from the previous post ...

After the frightening events at the palace on All Hallows Eve; the monks of Alt-Wittenberg have been charged with the safe disposal of the mummy of King Rubbatiti.

---oXo---

On All Souls Day a precession of monks left the abbey of Alt-Wittenberg for a nearby field where preparations have been made ...
The mummy was placed on top of a large funeral pyre...
the monks sing prayers as the pyre burns ...

thus the mortal remains of King Rubbatiti are gone, burnt to dust; may his soul find eternal rest.

The end of this strange and chilling incident .......

The awakening ......

continued from the previous post...

The next evening at the Palace the All Hallows Eve events were in full swing. Outside it was a crisp clear evening, and the constellation of Orion was rising .....
In the store room next to the museum the mummy stirred and rose from it resting place in the sarcophagus
The mummy wandered into the store room by the kitchen, frightening a scullery maid who ran away screaming  ...
There is much panic and consternation in the palace as the mummy blunders around; visitors and members of the court are ushered into the ball room for safety (one poor chap has fainted). The palace guards move to try and confine the mummy to the main hall.
Two monks from the abbey of Alt-Wittenberg, who by good fortune were visiting the palace that evening, confront the mummy in the main hall of the palace - chanting prayers in harmonic unison...
The King and Count Herman watch anxiously from the balcony of the hall ...
The monks chanting works and the mummy lays down, folds his arms and ceases moving ....
Afterwards ensuring the mummy is inert, it is sealed in its sarcophagus and given over to the safekeeping of the monks who take it away to the their abbey.

A liitle experiment ....

At a previous special meeting of the Royal Society - it had been agreed to try an experiment to see what effect Cantor's newly discovered electric fluid would have on the mummy in the palace museum.

Cantor had got his equipment ready; the mummy and its sarcophagus had been moved into a separate store room in the undercroft next to the museum. Cantor had setup his equipment and interested members of the Royal Society had come along to see what would happen.

Cantor adjusted the dials on his console and the small coloured globes flickered eerily. A sort of spritely crackly sound was heard along with a low hum. They watched in vain, nothing happened the mummy remained inert and lifeless. After a short while Cantor gave up and disconnected his equipment; the Royal Society repaired to another room to continue their discussions.
